No. Nearly all fonts contain characters such as S, O, C that have curves meaning they cannot balance and stand on their own. We recommend using glue or tape to ensure letters stand as well as ordering a thickness of greater than 1 inch if this the look you're going for.
Frequently Asked Questions
We've got answers!
Sign Letters
Can your sign letters letters stand on their own?
What material are your sign letters made out of?
Our indoor letters are made from PLA which is a plastic like material that is actually made from corn starch and as such is biodegradable in a commercial compost facility which are found in many cities.
Our outdoor letters are made from premium grade PETG plastic which is UV, heat and moisture resistant.
Both types of letters come in a wide variety of colors and finishes including metallic colors like gold and silver.
How do you mount your sign letters?
There are a large number of ways to mount our letters and which you choose really depends on the size / shape / color of the letters, the surface you're mounting to, how much you care about damage to that surface and how secure you need the mount to be.
Generally we prefer two sided tapes due to how easy they are to use. 3M Command Strips are great for painted drywall and won't damage the surface.
Gorilla Tape or Gorilla Tape heavy are our other preferred tapes which supply nail-like strength without holes in things and can attach to pretty much everything including brick and stone. Gorilla Tape (and other 2 sided tapes) are designed for a more permanent hold and can leave residue or damage the mounting surface.
Tapes generally work best for thick, larger letters.
Glues can also work, particularly if the letters are small or thin. We recommend Gorilla Glue Gel as our preferred glue. A hot melt glue gun can also work as well. With glues they do require masking tape to hold the letters in place to avoid slipping.
For outdoor letters or super-secure indoor mounting we suggest polyurethane glues or caulking. Epoxy also works fine though is a little more tricky to use.
Finishing nails can also work and are pretty small while providing a very solid mount and are easy to put up. On black or gray letters you can barely notice them. Less so on lighter colors.
Lastly we do offer screw holes for an additional charge if you're looking to really tightly mount or going for a more industrial look. We can do stud mounts as well to set them out from the wall if this is desired.
Are your sign letters suitable for indoor and/or outdoor use?
Yes! Our outdoor letters can be used either indoors or outdoors. Our indoor letters can only be used indoors as the material they are made from can deform under high heat.
Our indoor letters cannot be used outside. They are made from an eco-friendly corn based plastic that lasts forever indoors but is not designed to be UV or temperature resistant.
What is the size range of your sign letters?
Our letters are available at heights of between 1 inch and 14 inches and we sell them in half inch increments (ie. 1in, 1.5in, 2in, 2.5in etc..).
Our letters are available in multiple thicknesses ranging from ⅓ of an inch to 2 inches.
For our letters up to 9 inches in height the maximum width per letter is 8 inches.
For our 9.5 inch to 14 inch letters the maximum width per letter is 14 inches.
If a letter is wider we can either narrow the letter, produce the letter in multiple pieces or use a different font that is not as wide.
For letters greater than 14 inches in height the price per letter is the price of a 14 inch letter plus the price of another letter in height needed to achieve the desired height.
Ex. for one 20 inch height letter the price would be one 14in letter plus one 6in height letter.
We do not produce letters over 24 inches tall at this time.
Can your sign letters be illuminated or backlit?
Our letters themselves do not come with any lighting however it is possible to add lighting behind them when mounting using studs.
We also produce translucent letters that allow backlighting to pass through them as well as glow in the dark letters that are luminous in the dark.
Can you create a sign from my logo?
Yes! Most logos can be accommodated.
To get started you need to send your logo, ideally in vector (.ai or .svg) format to our customer service team as well as the height or dimensions you would like it to be.
Our team will then get back to you with a mock up, dimensions and pricing.
What fonts can I use to make my sign letters?
Just about any font will work! If you need a font we recommend visiting Google Fonts or DaFont.com as they have many styles that are organized by category and also offer live previews so you can see the exact word(s) you’re looking to spell.
How do you price your sign letters?
Our letters are priced per character and the price varies depending on the height and the thickness.
The height represents the height of the tallest letter or character in the word(s) you’re looking to spell.
Each listing contains prices for a particular thickness.
Do you offer quantity or other discounts?
Generally, no. We do offer limited discounts on orders from existing customers placed via our website and for professional projects from trade clients. If you have such a project let us know and we can provide the appropriate pricing for your project.
What colors do your sign letters come in?
We offer a wide selection of colors and finishes updated each season. Our indoor and outdoor letters come in different colors and finishes.
Our current color selection can be viewed at: https://spotind.com/colors
This page contains our full list of colors for indoor and outdoor respectively, as well as their approximate hex codes and photography showing these colors in real life.
What finishes are available for sign letters and what do they look like?
We offer the following finishes:
Indoor regular: a smooth, semi-gloss finish that reflects a small amount of light.
Indoor matte: a finely textured matte surface that reflects very little light.
Outdoor regular: a textured surface that reflects some light and has a slight sparkle to it.
Outdoor matte: a finely textured matte surface that reflects very little light.

Can you do a specific color if I provide the hex code?
No. We can however special order colors from a wide variety of vendors which means there are hundreds of additional colors available!
Special order colors add approximately 10-15% more to your order total depending on the cost of the color(s) you would like.
Many of these colors are available with strong guarantees as to the precise color, expressed in a Pantone color code. Hex code approximations are also available from many vendors though these are not 100% true to life.
Our letters can also be painted which provides a wide selection of additional possible colors.
Can your sign letters be painted or coated in different colors?
Yes! This is a great way to get your letters in an even larger variety of colors!
Our indoor letters can be painted with acrylic paint and common spray paint.
Our outdoor letters can be painted with spray paint suitable for outdoor use (such as Rust-Oleum)
Note we don’t offer this as a service at this time but it is a relatively easy project for customers to undertake.
How do I clean and maintain your sign letters?
Our sign letters are easily cleaned using dish soap (we recommend Dawn) and warm water.
Rinse them first to remove any debris that may scratch, then gentle clean with a cloth soaked in soapy water. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
Do not use chemical cleaners or hot water to clean. These methods will permanently damage your letters.
Do you make metal letters?
No. We currently do not make metal letters however we do offer a range of colors that resemble certain metals such as Gold, Silver or Copper.
Do you provide patterns or templates for mounting?
No. We do however provide instructions for mounting our stud mount letters. For correct spacing we suggest using the font you selected and printing characters to see the spacing set by the font designer. All font spacing is unique to a given font.
Can you match a font I’ve seen somewhere else?
We recommend using FontSpring and FontSquirrel both to get a wide range of fonts that are similar to the one you're looking for. We can also provide font suggestions if you’re stuck for ideas!
Are your sign letters hollow or solid?
Our letters are solid in appearance but are designed using a lightweight construction method making them mostly hollow on the inside.
This lightweight construction makes them easy to mount but doesn't allow for drilling or screwing unless you order letters with pre-made holes.
How do I install my sign letters?
For letters that don't come with studs or standoffs we suggest the following:
There are a large number of ways to mount our letters and which you choose really depends on the size / shape / color of the letters, the surface you're mounting to, how much you care about damage to that surface and how secure you need the mount to be.
Generally we prefer two sided tapes due to how easy they are to use. 3m Command Strips are great for painted drywall and won't damage the surface. Gorilla Tape or Gorilla Tape heavy are our other preferred tapes which supply nail-like strength without holes in things and can attach to pretty much everything including brick and stone. These last two though will leave residue or strip paint off drywall.
For ensuring the letters are level we suggest using a level and painters tape.
For spacing we suggest just doing this visually based on your spacing needs.
For Stud Mount or Standoff mounted sign letters we include detailed instructions with your purchase though we suggest professional installation as these types are difficult to install.
Am I eligible for a return or exchange on my sign letter order?
No. Sign letters are a customized product built to your specifications in terms of wording, font, size, color, thickness and material. As such they are not resellable and therefore we do not offer returns or exchanges. Full details of this policy are available here.
To avoid any surprises there are a few things we suggest:
- Requesting a mockup with sizing. We're happy to provide this if you let us know the font and spacing requirements. This will ensure your letters fit your space
- Review photography of our colors and finishes. You can find this at spotind.com/colors
- Review our Frequently Asked Questions which have lots of detailed answers to questions we commonly see. You can find this at spotind.com/faq
- Purchase a single letter in the color and finish you would like. This will allow you to test the exact material and finish in your space and lighting to ensure it meets the needs of your project
What is the strongest way to mount my sign letters?
Screws or stud mounts are usually considered the strongest way to mount sign letters but super strong two sided tapes and glues perform similarly and are easier to install than studs without holes in the front of the letters like screws.
3M VHB (very high bond) is a permanent tape used instead of fasteners in the automotive and aerospace industries and designed for plastic surfaces. To pull something attached with this tape down you would need to damage the mounting surface or the letter - it does not come off easily and require 30-40 pounds of force.
Another option is polyurethane adhesive. This is a little more work to install but produces an even stronger hold. Again intended to fully permanent it would require significant damage to the mounting surface or letter to remove it. You're into 70-100 pounds of force which is fairly hard to apply. The strongest in that category is Loctite PL Premium Fast Grab.

How far do your stud mount letters come off the wall?
Our stud mount letters can be mounted up to 1 inch off the wall and as low as flush with the wall for enhanced security. Each stud is 2 inches long, allowing for a 1/2 inch to be inserted into the letter and wall respectively. Studs up to 3 inches in length, allowing for 2 inches off the wall, can be special ordered for an additional charge.
Can I add a mounting option like stud mount or screw holes after I have placed my order?
Yes. If your order has not yet shipped we can add these for you. You can contact customer service via web chat or email and we can send you an invoice for the price difference
Can my letters be repaired if they are damaged?
No.
If the letter has been chipped and you're seeing both color and pieces of material missing there is nothing we are aware of that can fill in the chip. The best option is purchase a replacement letter.
How wide is each letter?
Every letter will have a slightly different overall width depending on the character (ex. A vs L vs W will all be different in total).
Likewise at 7in height not every letter is 7in fully - the exact height depends on the font's designer and while some fonts do have all letters the exact same height this is rare. Even if they visually appear the same, Ex. HOME, usually each letter has a slightly different height.
For example in the word 'ABUNDANCE' in the font Aptos, the C is the tallest letter at 7in exactly. It also happens to be the widest at 6.11in while the other letters are all 6.81in and then the widths differ - the E is quite slim at 4.35in while the A is fairly wide at 6.03in.
The thickness of the line of the letter - so where you have to apply tape or glue - also varies by letter or piece of the letter. For example at 7in height in font Aptos this is somewhere in the 0.9in to 0.7in range. For other fonts these numbers will vary.
For example the letter E at 7in in font Aptos the line going top to bottom is 0.9in wide while the three lines running left to right are 0.71in.
We always suggest requesting a mockup with the exact widths of the total word(s) you're looking to spell as using averages or approximations are extremely inaccurate and can lead to letters that don't fit a given space.
How is the height of each letter determined?
Your letters are sized based upon the height you purchased and the proportions set by the font's designer.
Specifically the height purchased will be the height of the tallest letter in the word(s) you are looking to spell. All other characters will be scaled according to the proportion set by the font's designer.
Letter widths are also determined by the font's designer and generally vary significantly by character, casing and the style of the font you selected.
We do not manually scale or otherwise adjust proportions from a font or vector without express written instruction to do so.
We are happy to provide mockups with exact sizing of heights and total widths should you have any questions about sizing - just let us know!
Can I nail or screw my letters to the wall?
No, unless you have purchased our letters with pre-made screw holes.
While our letters appear solid there is a significant amount of hollow space inside which does not allow a nail or screw to adhere to.
Our screw mounted letters contain pre-made holes that allow screw or nails to be used for mounting. These must be hand-tightened - do not use an electric drill to tighten screws.
Can you match my existing letters purchased somewhere else?
Generally no.
It is extremely hard to match an exact font, size, color and finish of an existing sign that may need certain letters replaced.
This is particularly challenging with outdoor sign letters that have accumulated weathering.
Any new letters tend to look significantly different from the older letters even if the font, height, color and finish can be perfectly matched which is almost always not possible.
In these cases we suggest purchasing a full new set of letters to ensure the look of your signage is consistent.
